Choose Stain for Long-Lasting Decks

The truth is, paint does not hold up well on unprotected, horizontal, high-traffic surfaces. The reason, paint and solid colored stains do not penetrate into the wood grain as well as semi-transparent or clear deck stains do. Paint tends to sit on top of wood causing it to peel. Therefore, use a semi-transparent or clear deck stain.

What to do if your deck already has a solid-colored paint or stain on it? You’ll need to thoroughly prepare the deck by removing all the paint to bring it back to the bare wood. Then apply one or two coats of a semi-transparent deck stain, let dry and enjoy for many seasons.
